00:28 David Blackmon: Hey everybody, welcome to another episode of WP The Podcast brought to you by WP Gears I’m David Blackmon.
00:35 Tim Strifler: And I’m Tim Strifler.
00:37 David Blackmon: Today at Episode six twenty three, how to answer the do I need a website question from clients? Obviously? Social media is free. Everybody’s on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik-tok you name it? Whatever the next one that comes out. Social media is free and some clients are under the misconception. I’m throwing it out there It’s a huge misconception that they don’t need a website, that everybody is on social and we’re gonna answer why and how you should answer this question? So Tim go.. ?
01:12 Tim Strifler: Ya know this is.. I would say it’s maybe not as common as it was when social media was on the rise and Facebook and Twitter and Instagram, you know came out and all that people were thinking “Oh, this is gonna replace websites”, but it still happens and also in certain niches as well. So for example in the Photography niche or niche depending on how you want to say that word. A lot of photographers have their Instagram profile and that’s it. And they literally do bids through Instagram. There’s their direct messaging people about photography projects. My cousin’s a professional photographer and I see this and so many of them don’t have websites, you know, it’s it’s like It’s not common to have a website. It’s not only like some of them don’t. It’s like most of them don’t, and so Yeah. So that’s that’s definitely a common dish. There’s there’s definitely a lot more where you see that and so I would say, the first thing that you want to tell a client that might be kind of saying that objection when you’re trying to do a website project for them is. When it comes to social media, you don’t own the content. You don’t know anything you’re completely putting all of your eggs in someone else’s basket, whether that’s Instagram, whether it’s Facebook, whether it’s you know, Whatever LinkedIn Twitter doesn’t matter. It’s someone else’s platform so you’re putting your eggs in someone else’s basket when you have your own website, and it’s on your own hosting. And You you know, it’s WordPress and you the continued and everything it’s yours. You can take it wherever you want. Do whatever you want. You control the process. No one can take that away You’re not fighting algorithms. You can build your email list you can build Organic traffic following it within Google and and so forth. And so you are in complete control.
02:56 David Blackmon: I think a perfect example of what you’re talking about Tim. Is Twitter lately with Donald Trump and the censorship that they chose to do to him, you know, which was his.. You know, we’re not this is not a political podcast. Let me throw that out there We’re not endorsing or not endorsing or throwing anybody under the bus. We just want to use as as an example You know. He made some you know, some claims and the platform because he didn’t own the platform, made some opposite claims from him. They didn’t agree with what he was saying, so They changed it and you know what? That’s the reality, you know, these social platforms and stuff. Yes. They’re free Yes, everybody’s on them. However, if the powers that be decide to change things tomorrow, guess what you’re screwed. So yeah do whatever they want. It’s their platform they can do whatever they want. Even if you’re the president of you know the United States of America, they’re gonna do what they want to change it. So Yeah, so it’s it’s really important to you know, own your own content and be in your own platform being control.
04:13 Tim Strifler: Yeah and another story that a really good example that applies to this is something that you told me about David. You had a a friend who had a pretty popular YouTube channel and all of their eggs was in the YouTube basket. And YouTube changed our algorithms and all of a sudden their views and their subscribers just kind of tanked, and it rather than them using YouTube to then build an email list and and build content on their website and start Diversifying they completely relied on the YouTube and it drastically affected their income, right?
04:47 David Blackmon: It killed their income! I mean it went from you know husband and wife – Oh 100% of the revenue and livelihood came from YouTube views and stuff in your right? January of 2019 YouTube changed their algorithm and their revenue tanked it went through the floor, and they had to scramble to figure out a way to, you know.. And I’ll tell you what now, they’re they’re using their website. There are a whole lot more, a whole lot smarter now about this very topic and stuff. So, you know do I need a website question from clients? The the answer is emphatically? 100% yes! Because you don’t own those other platforms. You don’t control it and anything goes they could change tomorrow and your whole business model and revenue can be gone. For you know for all intents and purposes and you could be you know broke and destitute. If you’re relying on that so Whereas if you own the platform and stuff and you build it properly like, you know Tim and I have teach in our course to Divi business expert course, you know You’re gonna be fine. No matter what Facebook YouTube or Twitter or any of those guys do. So Ya! Tomorrow we’ve got another great topic. Should I monetize my website with ads? Tim until tomorrow, we’ll see you then.
06:11 Tim Strifler: Take care. Bye bye.
