When You Need to Use a Child Theme

1. What is a child theme? 00:47
   • Basically, it’s a theme that inherits the functionality and styling of a parent theme and allows you to make your own customizations.
   • You can safely store your changes in the child theme, so when you update the parent theme you don’t lose your customizations.
2. If you are using a page builder… 02:06
   • The rule of thumb is to always use a child theme… but we say it’s not always necessary.
   • If you are using a page builder, like Divi, Beaver Builder, etc, then you may not need to use a child theme. You can do so much with the built in functionality.
3. If you are editing the core theme files 03:07
   • If you are editing the PHP or .js files, you should definitely use a child theme.
   • You should also use a child theme if you are adding custom CSS into a stylesheet.
