But together they leave less options for customers. “If you can’t beat them, buy them.” It’s great for the companies, but potentially bad for the customers.

This is absolutely bad for customers. This is one reason I’ve been very happy with SiteGround as they stand alone and I’ve heard have no intention of selling out to anyone. I pray that remains the case. The consolidation hurts the industry with less and less need for competition and good support. I had a friend get downsized after EIS bought out Site5. EIS just laid off practically EVERY EMPLOYEE and outsourced everything to India. I had a 9 year relationship with them that went down the toilet and I had to move ALL MY ACCOUNTS, which I had over 100. Not sure what we can do about it, but thanks for sharing!

Just listened to this podcast and I feel deflated. Recently moved sites from WP Engine to Flywheel and was about to move some client sites, too. Now what? If the Flywheel experience and price switches towards the WP Engine experience and price, I will have to find another new home and go to expense and hassle of moving.

Also, ditto your comments and concerns about HostGator. (and Bluehost, similarly). I had a site hacked and then was held hostage needing to add additional third party security service (on annual contract) with a company that I had just paid the penalty to discontinue service with…. Hmmm. Not okay.

Yeah I totally agree. Let’s hope they don’t change anything!
